Kalpeni Beach - Lakshadweep

Where?
Kalpeni is 3 kms long and has the breath of only 594 meters. This island is 76 kms from Andrott, towards the south and 183kms distance from Minicoy. To be a little more precise it is at 10 degrees05' north latitude and 73 degrees 39east longitude.

Why Kalpeni?
This island has a shallow and extensive lagoon. You can relax yourself, swim, or have a walk on vast lagoon. You can snorkel and indulge in adventurous water sports like kayaks, pedal boats and sailboats. There are changing rooms with two bathing huts are available at Koomel Beach Resort.

What else?
When the education for girls was tabooed, this was the place where girl started gaining education for the first time. This island was with satellite island of Cheriyam until 1847, when a strong storm separated the two islands. This storm also estranged Tilakkam and Pittiinto into several islands. This phenomenon has let a humongous coral stone deposits on eastern side, which made a natural wall of 17.5 meters wide and 3.6 meters in height.

How do I get there?
If you wish to reach the island by air then Indian Airlines flights operate except Sunday. The closest airport is at Agatti and Bangaram. You can take boats from various islands in Lakshadweep to Kadmat. Or you can take cruise from Mumbai. There is no rail and road transport as it is an island.
