Martin’s Corner
There is a landmark restaurant in South Goa which should not be given a miss. ‘Martin’s Corner’ as the restaurant is known, was started by Mrs. Carafina, who had opened a small shop for boys to play carom, where small tit-bits and soft drinks were served. Gradually, she expanded the place with sheer hard work and the patronage extended by the locals and the tourists. Martin’s Corner is very popular for authentic Goan dishes and some of the more popular dishes of Chinese cuisine. One must try the Goan sausages, Pork Sorpatel, Mutton Xhacuti and salads. The ambience is out of this world, with wood and bamboo construction, clever lighting and lots of indoor plants. They have live bands playing popular music. The liquors served include Indian liquors or shooters, liqueurs, cognacs, cocktails like Long Island Iced Tea, Sex on Sunset Beach and Betalbatim Delight. They serve bebinca and some baked desserts. The lobsters at Martin’s Corner are something to write home about, with varieties such as Thermidor, Butter Garlic, Piri Piri and Tandoori. Mrs. Carafina was awarded “The Life Time Achievement Award” at the International Cuisine Conference held at Hotel Fidalgo-Goa in September, 2007.
